Prices

  • Lake taster or half-day guided paddle: usually £35 to £90. A half day of white-water rafting sits in the same band.
  • Paddlesport Instructor: about £220 to £225, fees included.
  • White Water Leader training plus assessment: up to about £500.
  • Hire on its own: about £15 to £25 an hour. A session with a coach: about £35 to £60 an hour.

Every instructor, coach, leader and raft guide award needs full membership of your home nation association. Annual adult prices listed in October 2026:

  • Paddle UK (England): £65 for new members, £54 to renew. Youth (under 18) £37 new, £29 to renew.
  • Paddle Cymru: £51 (On the Water). Youth (under 18) £32.
  • Paddle Scotland: £51 (Full). Junior £23.50.

Who runs what

  • Paddle UK: previously named British Canoeing. It sets the overall framework for the national associations, covering coaching and competition, and it's the membership body for England.
  • Paddle Scotland, Paddle Cymru and Paddle Northern Ireland: the home nation associations. Paddle Cymru calls itself the national governing body for paddlesport in Wales, and Paddle Northern Ireland (formerly CANI) the national governing body in Northern Ireland. Paddle Scotland supports and develops all types of paddlesport in Scotland.
  • British Canoeing Awarding Body: the independent qualifications body for all four, and the only awarding body for paddlesport in the UK. Paddle UK says its qualifications are recognised and regulated by Ofqual, CCEA and Qualifications Wales.

Waterways licence

  • You need a waterways licence to paddle on most rivers and canals in England and Wales. Without one, you risk a fine or being asked to leave the water.
  • Paddle UK's On the Water membership includes one, covering over 4,500 km of water managed by the Canal & River Trust, the Environment Agency, the Broads Authority and others.
  • It covers kayaks, canoes, SUPs and inflatables. Carry your membership card (or add it to your phone's wallet).
  • No licence is needed in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Licensed activity providers

By law, anyone paid to provide canoeing, kayaking or rafting to under-18s on the sea, tidal water, large inland water (any part more than 50 metres from land) or water made turbulent by weirs, rapids or fast currents needs an adventure activities licence from HSE. Voluntary clubs teaching their own members are exempt.
