In this guide
- What it is: The rescue or lifesaving award you need to qualify for any Surfing England instructor or coach award.
- What you need first: Swimming and basic fitness. The awards set their own tests.
- What you'll learn: Rescue, group supervision and, on the RLSS surf coach award, first aid and life support.
- How long it takes: Instructor-only awards typically take three days. The full beach lifeguard award typically takes six.
- What's next: Surf Instructor: Recreation or ISA Level 1.
No rescue award, no teaching. You can start Surf Instructor: Recreation without one, but you need it to qualify. For Surf Coach: Progression, the full NVBLQ is a prerequisite.
Two types of award
Instructor-only awards. Built for beginner lessons in the white water at a surf school, usually over three days:
- Royal Life Saving Society UK National Surf Coach Lifesaving Award (NSCLA)
- Surf Life Saving GB's surf coach award
They don't qualify you to coach higher levels, run other watersports or work as a beach lifeguard.
For Surf Instructor: Recreation, Surfing England accepts either of these or the full NVBLQ, from RLSS UK or Surf Life Saving GB.
The full NVBLQ. The national standard for beach lifeguards. It has tougher fitness and swimming tests. It lets you take any level of surf coaching award, and it's the foundation award for RNLI beach lifeguards. Surfing England's Progression page and lifesaving page both say Progression and Performance coaches need the NVBLQ.
The NSCLA in brief
- Developed with support from Surfing England and the RNLI.
- At least 20 hours, then a practical assessment covering group supervision, first aid, life support, pool and ocean skills.
- Valid for two years from the date you pass.
Got an overseas lifeguard award? Surfing England accepts those the International Lifesaving Society lists as equal to the NVBLQ. The ISA/ILS Surf and SUP Water Safety Course counts only for beginner lessons in waist-deep water.
