Typical prices

  • Coached cable session, kit included: usually £70 to £165. A 15-minute public ride is hire, not a lesson, and isn't in that range.
  • Coached cable time: usually £70 to £165 an hour.
  • Boat driving: BWSW's recommended price is £150 for SBD1 and £250 for SBD2, though centres vary (see boat driving).
  • Becoming a coach: there's no licence just to ride. BWSW lists £595 for the Level 1&2 boat coaching course, plus £48 for the coach licence and £20 for the safeguarding course (checked October 2026). With the boat-driver ticket, first aid and a disclosure check, budget £595 to £850.

Who's in charge

  • BWSW: governs water skiing and wakeboarding, behind the boat and on cable, and says the UK government recognises it as a national governing body.
  • Sports councils: Sport England lists BWSW for water skiing, with wakeboarding under it. Sport Wales lists wakeboarding under water skiing, with BWSW as the UK body. The joint sports council list names Waterski and Wakeboard Scotland for Scotland and the Welsh Water Ski Association for Wales.
  • Wakeboard UK: BWSW's official committee for boat wakeboarding. It runs the UK Nationals and picks the GB squad (see competitions).
  • IWWF: BWSW is affiliated through the Europe and Africa region.

Accredited centres

BWSW accredits commercial boat and cable centres. It checks insurance, facility and operating standards, safeguarding and equality, customer service and staff qualifications. Cable sites also need a technical inspection.

What you're given

BWSW lists a wetsuit, a wakeboard, a helmet if needed, and a buoyancy aid or life jacket. Bring swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes.

Governing body: British Water Ski and Wakeboard (BWSW). It sets the UK safety standards and training awards for wakeboarding, so it's the official place to find out more.
