How to start wingsuit flying in the UK
Wingsuit flying in the UK starts after many skydives, not with a flight you can book.
In this guide
A wingsuit, flown correctly, greatly reduces your vertical speed in exchange for horizontal speed. A first jump is a tandem, a Category System jump or accelerated freefall, and wingsuit flying starts only after many skydives.
A first session
British Skydiving is the trading name of the British Parachute Association. To begin wingsuit training you must be a C Licence holder with Grade 1 in Tracking, with at least 500 descents, or at least 200 descents in the previous 18 months. You are introduced by a wingsuit coach and you get a full safety brief. Activities such as paragliding, fixed object jumping etc. do not come within the provisions of the British Skydiving Operations Manual. British Skydiving does not associate them with the sport of skydiving. The first-flight manual is for coaches teaching experienced skydivers, and the manual on its own is not enough: you also need instruction from a wingsuit coach.
What to take
The suit and the rig are chosen with the wingsuit coach. A little too loose is better than too tight, and the coach may refuse the jump if they are not happy with the equipment.
Our club map shows some UK wingsuit flying clubs, and it is a starting point rather than a full list.
If you would like help finding a coach, ESP can match you. The fee is £29.99. Nothing is charged when you send the form. The coach's own fees are separate. We refund the fee if we cannot provide a coach, or if your health means you cannot train. If the student is under 18, we need a guardian's consent, we contact that guardian, and the guardian travels with them.
