  • How long it takes: Two days, mixing virtual reflection, practical coaching and classroom sessions.
  • Cost: Skateboard GB lists £400 for Coaching Skills, and coach membership is £50 a year (checked October 2026).
  • What's next: Coaching track: run lessons, deliver the Cruiser Award or set up a skate school. Riding track: competitions.

What's on the course

Skateboard GB built this with the coaching community to make coaches more adaptable and creative. Topics include:

  • how skaters learn, including cognitive load theory;
  • the biopsychosocial model;
  • coaching styles, from coach-led to student-led;
  • professional judgement and decision making;
  • learning design and nested planning;
  • reflective techniques.

It draws on what coaches on the course already know and do, so you share ideas with the group.

Coach membership

If you teach skateboarding, Skateboard GB's Coach Membership is £50 a year. To buy it you need a Skateboard GB coaching qualification, an up-to-date DBS check (or the home nation version) and a safeguarding qualification completed within the last 3 years.

Running a skate school

Skate School Partner membership is £200 a year. Every coach at the school must have passed a Skateboard GB coaching course, and the school needs at least 3 staff.

Having a say

The UK Skateboard Coaching Commission brings coaches together, mostly online, to challenge and shape Skateboard GB's coaching work. You don't need lots of qualifications, just real coaching experience.

Funded places

The DISCO initiative also covers Coaching Skills places for people from marginalised groups.

Governing body: Skateboard GB runs the national coaching awards and competitions in England, and Skateboard Scotland is the recognised governing body in Scotland. Both are the official places to find out more.

Typical prices, checked October 2026. The club or coach sets and bills the price.

The club map lists some of the UK clubs for this sport. It is a starting point, so check with the club before you travel. To have a coach found for you, use the enquiry form.
