Get Rolling: Skateboard GB's first coaching course
How to become a skateboard coach in the UK with Skateboard GB's Get Rolling course: skills test, DBS, safeguarding, first aid and cost.
In this guide
- What it is: Skateboard GB's accredited entry-level coaching course, the first step on its coach development pathway. Its FAQ calls this its Level 1 qualification.
- What you need first: Age 18 or over. You must be able to stand on, push, turn (carving and tic-tacs) and stop confidently, roll up and back down a ramp, kickturn, drop in and ollie. Bring your own board and helmet.
- What you'll learn: How to plan, deliver and review safe beginner sessions, write a lesson plan, do a risk assessment, the anatomy of a skateboard and how to teach skatepark etiquette.
- How long it takes: Online learning on coaching principles, then one day face to face, usually at a weekend.
- Cost: Skateboard GB lists £200 a person, excluding VAT, including a year's coach membership with public liability insurance to coach anywhere in the UK. Courses in Scotland are £100 for Scottish residents, thanks to sportscotland funding (checked October 2026).
- What's next: Coaching track: bank 200 hours of teaching, then Coaching Skills. Riding track: keep skating and try competitions.
Who it's for
Skaters who want to work as a coach or instructor. Skateboard GB says the course is about participation rather than performance: taking people from their first step on a board to basic ramp tricks, in skateparks, schools or the community.
Before you get your certificate
You won't be qualified or insured until you have:
- completed an online safeguarding course;
- a valid Enhanced DBS check (PVG in Scotland, AccessNI in Northern Ireland);
- finished the online modules and attended the in-person day.
The course page gives you 90 days after the course to send in your DBS and safeguarding certificates and finish the online modules. The booking page says certificates from work or education dated within the last three years are accepted.
You must also pass a recognised first aid course before you start coaching.
Dates
Courses run around the country. See Skateboard GB's course list for current dates. There are also women and non-binary only Get Rolling courses.
